For every nine people who denounce innovation, only one will encourage it…For every nine people who do things the way they have always been done, only one will ever wonder if there is a better way. For every nine people who stand in line in front of a locked building, only one will ever come around and check the back door. Our progress as a species rests squarely on the shoulders of that tenth person. The nine are satisfied they are told are valuable. Person 10 determines for herself what has value.

Za Rinpoche and Ashley Nebelsieck in The Backdoor to Enlightenment  (Oprah Mag)

I’ve heard this statistic before about how 9 out of 10, or 90%, of people will do the thing that has always been done rather than re-invent the wheel. What I Iove about this excerpt is the last sentence and the way the authors reframed what this really means…that 90% of people will rely on value to be determine by external sources than by their internal one. I found myself saying over and over, “determine what has value for me, determine what has value for me.” Powerful, right? So as we go into the weekend, I’ll ask you–where have you determined that there’s value in your life & in what ways do you affirm it??

This reminds me a lot of DuBois’ theory of the Talented Tenth. It’s definitely an extension of his theory. Great post.
